Spud Orifice

Webster's definition of orifice: an opening (as a vent, mouth, or hole) through which something may pass.

For gas grill applications, the orifice "regulates" or "limits" the flow of gas by constriction of the path through which the gas must flow. An orifice usually threads into a female threaded end of a gas valve (spud orifice), or threads over a male threaded valve end (hood orifice).

Starter hole
For convenience, even so-called "blank" orifices have a small starter hole. This is because centering and drilling a truly blank orifice without the starter hole can be difficult outside of the production environment.

Drill size
The size of the hole is determined by a number of factors including the type of gas (LP is typically smaller than natural gas in a given situation), the BTU rating of the burners, gas pressure at the orifice, and BTU value of the gas. Refer to your owners manual or consult with a qualified gas technician to determine the exact size required for your grill.

Please tell us the number of burners in your grill and the total BTUs of your grill (less side burner and rotisserie burner, if any). BTU rating information can usually be found on the grill's CSA certification tag, located somewhere on the grill.
